2021 Noon Eclipse Grenache/Shiraz

93 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
A gorgeously rich Grenache-led blend from Aussie boutique legends, Noon. For most years since 2003, Parker's Wine Advocate has given this wine 94+ points, and with good reason. Grapes from 80 year old vines in Noon's home vineyard in McLaren Vale are hand-picked, fermented in small open vats and then basket pressed for gentle extraction. Voluptuous richness meets artisanal style.

Its Origins

The Noon family’s winemaking on their McLaren Vale property had been local and slightly under the radar. But when the property went up for sale, son Drew Noon MW returned from winemaking work at Tyrrells and Cassegrain, and then as a jobbing winemaker in Victoria, to take over the reigns. Combining the simplicity and artisan directness of his father’s basket-press approach with his newfound skills in crafting wine to the highest market standards, Drew’s work ethic heavily overcompensated for what they lacked in backing. With continuing access to old vines in Langhorne Creek’s highly favourable climate, Noon wines soon won the attention of Robert Parker and international acclaim was to follow. While remaining full-bodied, hedonistic reds of the old school tradition, Noon wines’ combination of extreme approachability with distinctive authenticity and character has ensured them an enduring position at the premium level of Australian winemaking.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Vinous, Angus Hughson

"The 2021 Eclipse is an exotic and irrepressible blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Graciano. It showcases luscious ethereal raspberry and cranberry aromas with a subtle dusting of dried meats and spice. It's then surprisingly reserved and tightly coiled before lashings of ripe sweet fruit emerge with a meaty edge. All of these flavors are beautifully supported by significant but well-integrated tannins. Drink 2023-2030"

Winemaker notes on current vintage

"Produced from 90% Grenache, 6% Shiraz and 4% Graciano all grown on our McLaren Vale vineyard. The vines which produce this wine surround our house and the furthest are 500m from it, so they are very familiar in all their seasonal guises. They are like old friends. I have pruned and tended them since I was a child and so the appearance of the vines themselves, the leaves and the bunches as they develop, is very familiar. I feel like I share a life experience with them and so they are close to my heart. The new Eclipse has a lovely perfume of fresh red currants and wild strawberries. It almost smells of summer, all exotic berries and spice, The texture is smooth and full bodied, filling every corner of your mouth. The balance is very good particularly considering the generosity of flavour here, with a long firm clean (almost refreshing) finish."

96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 Eclipse is 87% Grenache, 8% Graciano and 5% Shiraz, all off the McLaren Vale estate vineyard. As it almost seems to, it boasts gorgeous aromas of raspberries, accented by a range of herbs and spices that include notes of orange zest, bay leaf and rose petals. It's full-bodied, with assertive but silky tannins that should help preserve the wine's freshness as it ages. Although full-bodied, it handles its alcohol well, showing just a trace of warmth on the lingering finish."
