2020 Bouchard Monthelie 1er Cru Champs Fulliot

92 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
An expressive single vineyard Pinot Noir from Burgundy. Clos Les Champs Fulliot offers limestone rich soils with minerality and nice drainage, along with a southeasterly aspect capturing the longest exposure to the morning sun. This terroir is effectively an extension of the vineyard's famous and more expensive neighbour, Volnay Clos des Chenes. As a result, the aromatics are bright and ripe-fruited with the tannins for proper aging. This vineyard has exceptional qualities, but it can't command the price of its Volnay neighbours due to its association with the humbler sites in Monthelie. A sweet spot for mid term and immediate enjoyment.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

90-92/100 Vinous, Neal Martin

"The 2020 Monthélie Les Champs Fulliot 1er Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, hints of loam and espresso emerging with time. It just needs to cohere during its barrel maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine structure, beautifully integrated oak that lends this a real sheen towards the finish. This Monthelie comes highly recommended."

89-92/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

A perfumed and very pretty nose freely reveals its aromatic profile of dark raspberry, black pinot and violet. There is slightly better volume to the delicious and palate coating medium-bodied flavors that display focused power on the dusty, youthfully austere and serious finale. At least some patience would be beneficial. Drink 2028+
