2020 Pegasus Bay Sauvignon/Semillon

95 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A superb classic of Sauvignon-Semillon from Waipara and the last vintage it will be produced so stock up if this is a fav. This rarer style is Bordeaux-influenced and food-orientated. Offering lovely texture and complexity, 30% Semillon is fuller bodied and introduces a citrus and waxy-mineral element that rounds out Sauvignon's brighter acid and aromatic. This really sings with seafood but will suit any white meat dinners. Delicious!

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Complex and attractive, there’s a heady beguiling scent to the bouquet with aromas of quince and passionfruit, citrus peel and lemon drop, fresh herbs and wild passionfruit. Flroal and mineral. On the palate a delicious textured wine with flavours of orange peel and quince, tropical fruits and citrus all with an herbaceous edge and new release energy. The lees and light wood notes add complexity and length. A great wine for food with best drinking from 2023 through 2029." Drink 2023 - 2029

93/100 James Suckling

Intense notes of flint, toast, beeswax, burnt lemons, pineapples, guavas and grilled herbs. It's medium- to full-bodied with tangy acidity and a waxy texture. Lengthy with excellent concentration. Sustainable. Better from 2023. Screw cap."

18.5/20 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"Bright, pale yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is full, with striking aromas of struck match, roasted hazelnut overlying yellow fruit, and herbal elements. Full-bodied, aromas of nectarine, guava, pineapple interweave honeysuckle, ginger and herbs, unfolding roasted hazelnut and a struck match. The fruit is lush with good ripeness, supported by vibrant acidity. The flavours are complex and weighty; richness and ripe phenolics contribute to an unctuous palate and a lengthy finish. This complex and sophisticated Sauvignon Semillon blend possess ripe yellow fruit, herb, and spice details on a weighty and rich textured palate. Match with char-grilled swordfish and roasted pork over the next 6-8 years. A blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc fermented in stainless steel with 50% whole bunch and matured on skins for 200 days. Semillon fermented in oak puncheons, both components aged on lees for approx 10 months and further aged a year in bottle before released. 18.5/20 pts (93 pts) Sep 2020 RRP $34." Drink 2020 - 2028
