This special cellar release is a serious 100% Chenin Blanc from a leader in the otherwise red-dominant area of the Loire Valley. Raffault has some of the oldest Chenin Blanc vines in Chinon in a one-hectare monopole called 'Champ Chenin', a particularly limestone-rich patch of ground in due west of the famous Les Picasses vineyard. Olga Raffault work in an age-old organic and low-intervention tradition with native yeasts and minimal sulfur. The result is tiny quantities of this single vineyard Chenin that is both compelling and classical. Snap this up!

Its Origins

Over five generations, Domaine Olga Raffault has gained cult status as unquestionably one of the benchmark producers for top-quality, traditional Chinon. These are beautifully balanced and complex medium bodied reds. The fruit is elegant and refined with extremely fine tannins, earthy but with plenty of acidity and a mineral edge. They drink wonderfully on release but are also capable of aging for decades. Olga Raffault has a very intriguing history, There are few women who have given their names to estates in the Loire Valley, but Olga Raffault is one of them. She took over the reins of the Domaine under tragic circumstances: She and her husband Pierre had operated this estate together until he died unexpectedly just before harvest in 1947. Without him Olga was left to run the business alone, assisted by Ernest Zenninger, a German prisoner of war who had found refuge and work at Raffault years earlier. According to the family, the "courageous and generous German" did not understand the war and  found meaning through the deep friendship that he wove with his ‘Protectors,’ the Raffault family. In return he made a promise to devote his life to Olga and her two children at the last moments of Pierre Raffault. Ernest became the winemaker at the Domaine and mentored Olga’s son Jean Raffault as he grew up. The two of them ran the estate as a team for decades, under Olga’s watchful eye, until Jean’s daughter Sylvie and her husband Eric de la Vigerie took over in 2000. Raffault has terrific plots of land in the Véron, a strip of land with sandy and gravelly soils where the Vienne River intersects with the much larger Loire. They farm 24 hectares with vines averaging over 30 years in age. Most of it Cabernet Franc with a minuscule one hectare of Chenin Blanc.   Raffault have a very minimalist approach both in the vineyard and the winery. The grapes are always hand-picked, only native yeasts are used, and they choose not to destem the bunches before fermentation begins in stainless steel. The wines are then aged slowly in larger, neutral oak and chestnut - a traditional wood barrel in the region.

What The Critics Say

94/100 A view from the cellar, John Gillman

"The 2018 Chinon Blanc “Champ-Chenin” from Domaine Raffault is really an outstanding bottle of young, bone dry Chenin Blanc. The wine comes in at 12.5 percent alcohol and possess a nervosité on the palate that is really delightful. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of green apple, quince, a lovely base of chalky soil, beeswax, spring flowers and a dollop of upper register lanolin. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied, focused and racy, with a superb core of fruit, excellent mineral drive and a long, nascently complex and impeccably balanced finish. Great juice. 2021-2045."

91/100 RobertParker.com, Stephan Reinhardt

"The 2018 Chinon Champ-Chenin offers a pure, fresh and dense, well-concentrated lemon and stony bouquet that is still very young. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and balanced Chenin Blanc from clay-limestone soils. Fermented with whole berries and pressed very gently, this is a filigreed, minerally fresh and persistently salty Chinon with fine phenolic grip and structure on the finish. Ripe pear aromas on the aftertaste. The 2018 already drinks quite well, but like Riesling, it will benefit from further bottle aging. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted in April 2021." Drink 2021 - 2040

93/100 Vinous, Jason Wilson (2017 Vintage)

"Deep golden in color. Expressive nose of peach and pear, along with herbs and white pepper. On the palate, it’s a fruit basket exploding with citrus and orchard fruit, yet balanced by powerful acidity and a precise, puckery, stony finish. Powerful, complex and ageworthy. Joyful and full of depth. Drink 2020-2032"
