2022 Paddy Borthwick Paper Road Pinot Noir

93 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A fantastic Pinot for a crazy-low price! (and the critics think so to with a 93/100 from Cameron Douglas and a 93/100 from Candice Chow). The wines of Paddy Borthwick keep overdelivering and this obviously underpriced label "Paper Road" represents a classic example of his expert winemaking and superb quality fruit. This red is not a blockbuster, but instead a beautifully defined Pinot Noir with delicately savoury red fruits and a wonderfully harmonious, refreshing feel about it. Chillable and classy, the Paper Road is a great quality Pinot for the price!

Its Origins

Borthwick Vineyard established in 1996, family owned and managed. The 27 hectares of vines bordering the Ruamahunga River in Gladstone, Wairarapa are on stony, free draining, alluvial soils, with a microclimate giving warm daily temperatures, cool nights and low rainfall; perfect conditions for producing distinctive, quality wines. Paddy Borthwick has a wealth of experience not only in winemaking but also the performance of varieties and understanding of sites in the region. Along with Briony Carnachan joined the team in 2018, who previously and Urlar and Matahiwi. (Raymond Chan Reviews)

What The Critics Say

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Aromas of pinosity driven by light red berry fruits and roses, some layers of crumbled stone mineral suggestions, barrel spices and a steely youthful energy. Taut and dry as the wone touches the palate, I notice the tannins and acidity first setting a decent foundation for ageing. Next, the fruit flavours of cherry and strawberry, some cranberry then barrel spice complexity. Well made and still very youthful with plenty of tension across the palate, this means best drinking is likely from 2025 through 2030+. I expect this wine will age remarkably well, a wine to cellar and test the theory." Drink 2025 - 2030+

93/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"Bright, light ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is softly lifted and herbaceous, with aromas of thyme, dark raspberry, tea leaf and cracked pepper. Medium-bodied, aromas of dark raspberry melded with tea leaf, thyme, cracked pepper and a hint of hibiscus. Fine-grained tannin grip counterbalanced by a creamy palate, unveiling a concentrated, peppery finish. This light-coloured Pinot Noir is elegant, concentrates with rich herbs, spice, and a lingering finish. Match with herb-crusted lamb and roasted duck over the next 3-5 years. 13.5% alc. 18.5/20." Drink 2023 - 2028
