2020 Mystery Old Vines Waipara Pinot Noir

5 Stars Richard Caro
In stock
An amazing deal on this delicious "cleanskin" Pinot we have sourced from some of the oldest vines in North Canterbury. As always, the producer will remain a fascinating source of mystery — but rest assured they are old hands in the region, known for a highly regarded label that is a favourite on our shelf. This has had the full works that only top shelf pinot noir receives. Hand harvested and hand sorted. Each clone is picked separately, and they stay separate until final blending. 20% is fermented as whole cluster with a mixture of wild and organically cultured yeast . The ferments are all managed with gentle punch down by hand. 25% New French oak is used. The wine is unfined. A Pinot worth much much more than its price, this is one of those deals... What The Critics Say

Winemaker Vintage notes

"2020 was the earliest vintage in our history, we had a warm, dry September and cool October were followed by our hottest November on record, this set up very favourable conditions for flowering. Summer started with dry, slightly warmer conditions than normal for both December and January, followed by a dry, much warmer than average February, this put much of the east coast of New Zealand, including North Canterbury into drought. March brought a break in the heat and some much need rain that slowed the ripening of beautiful clean fruit, the first blocks were picked on the 16th of March. April, returned to dry weather, with above-average temperatures which was ideal for the bulk of our harvest."
