2018 Planeta Mamertino Rosso

92 Points Parker's Wine Advocate
In stock
An elegant red and a piece of history grown on Sicily's north-eastern coast. This wine is from the small Baronia estate on the windy promontory of Capo Milazzo (depicted on the textured label), where the deep alluvial soils are topped by up to 60cm of volcanic ash. This brings local red grapes into an age-old blend "Mamertino di Milazzo" -- which was mentioned by Pliny and favoured by Julius Caesar. This one however is modern, poised and "quite irresistible", with Nero D'Avola giving spicy dark fruits and ripe tannins, while Nocera adds brightness and licorice spice. Expressive, fine and focused. A unique and sophisticated style for the price.

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say

92/100 RobertParker.com, Monica Larner

"This wine shows a bright bouquet that is driven by loads of fresh fruit. The Planeta 2018 Mamertino is redolent of fresh summer cherry, dried raspberry and wild plum. This release of about 20,000 bottles represents a traditional blend of 60% Nero d'Avola and 40% Nocera, whose tannic impact is light. The wine presents an accessible and highly drinkable approach with your favorite southern Italian pasta dish." Drink 2021 - 2025

91/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"The 2018 Mamertino is dark and earthy, grumbling up with suggestions of plum sauce and grilled herbs complicated by flowery undergrowth. It's soft and round yet quite mineral in style, taking on a crunchy sensation as tart wild berry fruits cascade across the palate. Blackberry hints linger through the licorice-tinged finale. The 2018 finishes grippy and long." Drink 2025 - 2030

91/100 Decanter, James Button

A 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Nocera blend aged in 25hl casks for 12 months, this wine is from the small Baronia estate on the windy promontory of Capo Milazzo, where the deep alluvial soils are topped by up to 60cm of volcanic ash. ‘We think one of the big local grapes on the island will be Nocera,’ winemaker Patricia Tóth noted. It has a fresh and herbal aroma, while in the mouth it's succulent yet with a mineral tightness. Juicy spiced cherry and black fruits combine with chocolatey tannins, leading to a saline, spicy and slightly meaty finish brightened by a streak of raspberry coulis." Drink 2022 - 2026
