"The 2018 Mamertino is dark and earthy, grumbling up with suggestions of plum sauce and grilled herbs complicated by flowery undergrowth. It's soft and round yet quite mineral in style, taking on a crunchy sensation as tart wild berry fruits cascade across the palate. Blackberry hints linger through the licorice-tinged finale. A 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Nocera blend aged in 25hl casks for 12 months, this wine is from the small Baronia estate on the windy promontory of Capo Milazzo, where the deep alluvial soils are topped by up to 60cm of volcanic ash. ‘We think one of the big local grapes on the island will be Nocera,’ winemaker Patricia Tóth noted. It has a fresh and herbal aroma, while in the mouth it's succulent yet with a mineral tightness. Juicy spiced cherry and black fruits combine with chocolatey tannins, leading to a saline, spicy and slightly meaty finish brightened by a streak of raspberry coulis." Drink 2022 - 2026
