2019 Planeta Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese

94 Points James Suckling
In stock
A step up from the standard Etna, this is a lusher, richer-fruited expression of this complex grape and terroir. Grown at 860m on the volcanic sand deposits of the lava flow from the legendary decade long 1614 Eruption. Here high in the extraordinarily mineral rich 'black lands' of Sicily's Mt Etna, the local Nerello Mascalese ripens long and slow into an intensely aromatic red wine with an elegant structure.. All the while capturing the subtle savoury and mineral background yielded by these distinctive soils. Silky yet layered and subtly complex, the 1614 is a serious delight.

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say

94/100 James Suckling

"Aromas of sliced strawberry, red cherry and grated nutmeg. Medium-to full-bodied with fine, slightly tense tannins. Bright and acidity-driven on the palate, with lots of white-peppery excitement. Grounded by notes of wet stone and sage. Well structured and layered. Best after 2024."

93/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"The 2019 Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 is delicate and floral in the glass, with pretty rose tones and spice hints complementing dusty black cherry. It washes across the palate with ease, soft and juicy in feel with tactile mineral tones that add grip toward the close. A coating of fine tannins lingers as the 2019 finishes remarkably fresh yet youthfully structured. Some time will be required for this to come fully into focus." Drink 2025 - 2031

92/100 WinesCritic.com, Rafaelle Vecchione

"Very elegant on the nose, it shows notes of raspberries, currants, coriander, nutmeg, wet earth, pink grapefruit and lime juice and bergamot. Medium-full body, round tannins and a tasty and well-relaxed finish in the sip. Drink now."
