2020 Elvio Cogno Barbaresco Bordini

94 Points James Suckling
In stock
A delicious Barbaresco from one of the finest houses in Piedmont. Cogno is a leading Barolo producer who is so serious about the potential of the other great Nebbiolo village that they have decided — alongside other Barolo names like Massolino and Vietti — to release a Barbaresco as well. From 70yr old vines in the commune of Neive. Like Cogno’s other wines, this Barbaresco is elegant and structured, with a fiercely independent character. A serious red to drink or cellar.

Its Origins

After working with Marcarini in La Morra, Elvio Cogno returned to his family village in 1990 to rebuild an historical farm into the home of one of Piedmont's more important Barolo producers. Now daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore are the force behind the rising fortunes of the house, producing strictly classic wines with modern cleanliness and technique, low yields and sustainable, closely managed vineyards.

What The Critics Say

94/100 James Suckling

"Attractive raspberries and cherries with hints of roselle and red spices. Some blood orange, too. Medium- to full-bodied, polished and refined with compact tannins and velvety texture. It’s ripe but fresh with pure and vivid red fruit character and a lengthy finish. Attractive now, but better after 2025."

96/100 Wine Enthusiast, Kerin O’ Keefe (2019 Vintage)

“Fragrant, focused and loaded with finesse, this impressive red opens with aromas of iris, red berry, spice and camphor. Elegantly structured and savory, the vibrant palate features juicy raspberry, Morello cherry, star anise and wild mint framed in taut, finegrained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced.”

94/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2018 Vintage)

"Cogno is mostly known for their wines from Barolo, and rightly so, but their Barbaresco Bordini is every bit as notable. It captures all the resonance and size this Neive cru is known for. The 2018 Barbaresco Bordini is a dark, full-bodied wine that expresses the natural intensity of this sector in Neive. Readers will find a bold, structured Barbaresco endowed with serious depth. Black cherry, sage, menthol, licorice, mocha and spice are all kicked up in a Barbaresco that balances energy with size. The 2018 is one of the best versions of this wine I can remember tasting."
