2017 La Massa Giorgio Primo
Previously 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot
Fattoria La Massa can be found hidden amongst the Chianti Classico hills of Panzano in the prestigious “Conca d’Oro,” (Golden Basin). It was acquired by its passionate owner, Giampaolo Motta, in 1992. Giampaolo, originally from Naples, came to the area in 1989 to follow his dream of making high quality wines. After working in some of the most famous Chianti Classico estates and spending time in Bordeaux, Giampaolo established La Massa with the technical consultation of famed enologist and friend Carlo Ferrini. Since the end 2008, he relies on the advice of renowned Stéphane Derenoncourt for the vineyards and cellar. La Massa’s vineyards range in altitude from 315 to 460 meters (1,033 to 1,510 feet) above sea level, occupying an area of about 45 hectares (111 acres), of which 27 are planted with vines.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"The 2017 Giorgio Primo is fabulous. Inky, deep and pulsing with energy, the 2017 has so much to offer. Most surprisingly of all, it is quite reticent and closed, which is so unusual for this wine. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, leather, cedar, spice, tobacco and espresso add a good deal of aromatic intensity, with plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon savoriness. The 2017 is much less forthcoming on the palate, where it remains unyielding, at least today." Drink 2025 - 2037
98/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2016 vintage)
"The consistency and depth of this wine is just incredible. Like the Carla 6, the 2016 Giorgio Primo shows an inky dark color, almost totally black, with penetrating fruit and long waves of rich fruit flavor throughout. George the First casts mesmerizing spells of spice, tar and smoke. This is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. This is another outstanding effort from Fattoria La Massa and its eccentric but visionary founder, Giampaolo Motta. Some 16,000 bottles, magnums, double magnums and other large formats were created."
