Its Origins

It all began in the early 1990's, when the owners of five newly-planted vineyards in Bannockburn shook hands and decided to work together to produce wine under one label, Mt Difficulty. As a result, Mt Difficulty now owns some of the oldest vineyards in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand's rugged South Island. The Mt Difficulty brand started in 1998 with a very small production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made by Grant Taylor of Gibbston Valley Wines (now of Valli Wines). Prior to this the gang sold their grapes to either Gibbston Valley or Chard Farm. The Air New Zealand wine awards in 1999 put Mt Difficulty on the map, with the 1998 Pinot Noir winning a gold medal and the Chardonnay, silver.

What The Critics Say

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 vintage)

Grown and hand-picked at Bannockburn, in Central Otago, and lees-aged in tanks, the still-youthful 2017 vintage (4.5*) is a freshly scented, mouthfilling wine, made in a basically dry (4.4 grams/litre of residual sugar) style. Vibrantly fruity, it has strong, pure pear and lychee flavours, a hint of spiciness, and excellent delicacy, harmony and depth. A classy, finely textured wine, it should be at its best 2019+.
