This crisp and minerally Sauvignon Blanc is Astrolabe's legendary classic. Last vintage was selected for Marlborough's Annual Collection and also reached #15 out of 9200 in Wine Spectator's Top 100, the fourth time the Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has made this definitive international list. The vineyard sources include the warmer Wairau in a bell curve of Marlborough flavours that are completed by the gooseberry-green citrus of the cooler valleys. From true experts in the region, this regional blend is a go-to for lovers of classy Marlborough Sauvignon.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

Selected for the Appellation Marlborough Annual Collection 2022

Winemaker press release: "Appellation Marlborough has launched a new initiative to select 12 sauvignon blancs each year to represent our region. We are extremely proud to have earned two spots in the top 12: our Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Astrolabe Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2022. The purpose of the collection is to showcase the best examples of Marlborough sauvignon blanc. You can find more about Appellation Marlborough on their website. The judges were Emma Jenkins MW, Liz Wheadon and Cameron Douglas MS, and more than 60 wines from Marlborough’s best producers were tasted blind. There were only nine places reserved for classic styles, and we are the only producer to have two wines in that category. For these two wines, Simon is looking for a pure expression of variety and region, so he is pleased to see this being appreciated by the judges."

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Concentrated, luscious sauvignon blanc, with juicy passionfruit, guava and pink grapefruit flavours supported by tangy acidity that gives a refreshingly crisp finish. A skilfully-made wine with an impeccable sweet-and-sour balance. 27 OCT 2021”

93/100 and rated Excellent, Cameron Douglas MS (2022 vintage)

”Classic bouquet with a concentrated fruit centric beginning, citrus and saline, apple and white peach, fresh herbs and sandy stony mineral quality. Flavours on the palate include grapefruit and lemon peel, fresh apple and gooseberry moments. The saline suggestion from the bouquet rings loud and clear on the palate. Herbaceous, fresh, fruity and dry. A well made wine with some concentration and vibrato.”
