2022 Hiedler Gruner Veltliner Loss

An elegant Gruner from the grape's homeland, Austria. Hiedler's basic estate wine used to be called 'Spiegel', but has been split into alternative expressions Langenlois and this one called Löss, which means Loess in English and refers to the richer sediment soils on which it was grown. Another beautiful Hiedler that shows why Gruner is weirdly like great Burgundy, but cheaper. Superb with or without white meats, and serious value!

Gruner Veltliner

Its Origins

From 35 hectares of Erste Lage (Premier Cru) holdings in the Kamptal, the Hiedler family has been producing wine in Langelois since the mid-18th century. Starting in 1980, Ludwig and María Angeles Hiedler have led operations, while their son Ludwig Jr. finishes his winemaking studies and practicum at Von Volxem. Hiedler’s holdings are in the best vineyards in the Kamptal, with Riesling parcels in the Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, and Grüner Veltliner in the deep loess vineyards that rest at the base of those mountains: Lamm, Grub, and Renner. Hiedler’s other sites in the area include a ‘Grand Cru’ monopole, Thal, Spiegel, Steinhaus, and Loiserberg. In addition to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the Hiedlers work with Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), the first plantings of which were planted by Ludwig’s father in the Schenkenbickl, a ‘Grand Cru’ plot just below the Käferberg. All organic/natural practices. Notably, malolactic fermentation is never blocked but allowed to occur naturally, allowing Hiedler a quite broad and unique dimension of texture and weight; a distinctive approach to both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from this region.

What The Critics Say

Winemakers Note

"Fruity entrée, white flowers, young apple, mirabelle, bright with nuances of herbs; yellow fruit charcter on the palate, juicy acidity, again apple, beautiful texture, very versatile food companion. Grüner Veltliner Löss forms the basis of our portfolio. It is sourced from vines growing on the eponymous loess soils. They have been formed over the millennia. We are talking about mineral dust of weathered alpine rocks, crushed under the weight of ice age glaciers. Enormous storms have deposited this dust, in various mineral compositions of lime, dolomite, quartz, mica and clays, along the Danube and its tributary valleys. The mineral-rich and porous soil characterizes the typical bright fruit and fine spice of this Veltliner."

90/100 Wine Enthusiast

"Firm and well structured, with fine concentration for a silky wine. There are yellow apple, nectarine and hominy flavors, shaded by notes of lemon meringue and spice. It is a classic example with a spice-infused finish."

92/100 James Suckling (2019 vintage)

"A layered, creamy textured white with sliced-pear, flint and dried-mango character. Its dry and flavorful. Lovely finish. Drink and enjoy. Screw cap."
