2022 Astrolabe Awatere Sauvignon Blanc

95 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A superb Awatere Sauvignon made by Marlborough's experts in sub-regional whites. The Awatere Valley is a bit cooler than the rest of Marlborough, so there's less overt tropical fruit. Instead a brisk and focused style offers whte-green fruits along with a mineral streak that makes it very refreshing. Classic and just so beautiful in the glass, this is one to try.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

Selected for the Appellation Marlborough Annual Collection 2022

Winemaker press release: "Appellation Marlborough has launched a new initiative to select 12 sauvignon blancs each year to represent our region. We are extremely proud to have earned two spots in the top 12: our Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Astrolabe Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2022. The purpose of the collection is to showcase the best examples of Marlborough sauvignon blanc. You can find more about Appellation Marlborough on their website. The judges were Emma Jenkins MW, Liz Wheadon and Cameron Douglas MS, and more than 60 wines from Marlborough’s best producers were tasted blind. There were only nine places reserved for classic styles, and we are the only producer to have two wines in that category. For these two wines, Simon is looking for a pure expression of variety and region, so he is pleased to see this being appreciated by the judges."

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2022 Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc hails from (ok, obviously) the Awatere Valley, which is the neighboring valley to the Wairau. Undulating and rocky, this part of Marlborough yields wines of distinct character, and here, that is obvious in the glass. Far from the tropics of the Wairau, the Awatere is more mineral and more austere, and I love this wine for that attribute. With crushed shells, lemon pith and brine, this is leafy, and it’s thrumming with graphite acidity and tension in the phenolic structure. Really quite lovely wine. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2028"

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2021 vintage)

"Fragrant and exacting bouquet, savoury, and fresh. Citrus and white stone fruits, salty air, fresh and dried herbs with a rocky mineral complexity. On the palate - delicious, tense and youthful, a core of fruit with flavours of lemon and grapefruit, white fleshed stone fruits, a savoury dried herb complexity and lengthy salivating salty finish. A delicious and vivacious wine with a core of fruit and varietal power. Best drinking from purchase and through 2025."
