2021 Te Kairanga John Martin Martinborough Chardonnay

Its Origins
Te Kairanga is one of Martinborough’s founding vineyards established over 30 years ago. In keeping with the pioneering spirit surrounding the vineyard, a number of Te Kairanga wines have hailed from Martinborough’s history and that of its inhabitants dating back to 1879. Now under the direction of Chief Winemaker, John Kavanagh (ex Neudorf Vineyards Winemaker for many years) the Te Kairanga wines have taken a major leap forward in terms of quality. The John Martin Reserve Wines, known and loved by many, is notably named after the founding father of Martinborough – John Martin himself. Likewise the Pinot Runholder is aptly named as a tribute to the Runholders of the land back in time.
What The Critics Say
96/100 The Real Review, Aaron Brasher
"100% Mendoza clone, all barrel fermented in 15% new oak and put through 60% malolactic fermentation. After three months, 40% of the wine was taken out of oak and put to tank unsulphured. This wine has layers and layers of flavour that build complexity the more time it has in the glass. The acidity has real cut and drive and the high level of malo sits supremely in the wine delivering texture and mouth-feel. Chief winemaker John Kavanagh is extremely proud of this wine, and rightly so: it has real sophistication, balance and exudes quality and class. 02 OCT 2023." Drink 2023 - 2030
95/100 bob Campbell MW
"Elegant, concentrated chardonnay with classy oak, hazelnut, lime zest, and oyster shell flavours supported by bright, tangy acidity. Supple, high energy wine that is delicious now but promises to develop well with bottle age. 22 APR 2023." Drink 2023 - 2031
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"This is complex and engaging, showing grapefruit, golden peach, cedar and brioche characters, leading to a concentrated palate displaying outstanding weight and focus. It's finely layered with delectable flavours, finishing impressively long and sophisticated." Drink 2024 - 2033
