2021 Hartford Court Russian River Chardonnay

93 Points John Caro

A refined Chardonnay from the famous Russian River in Sonoma County, Northern California. Typical of its foggy and slow-ripening conditions, this delicious Chardonnay's more delicate citrus and mineral-led style is touched by beautiful nuances of spice, and riper fruit notes. Its Origins

Hartford is owned by the Jackson Family Estates. Hartford’s wines are rare. Year after year, they rank among the most sought-after collectables from California. Since the 1994 vintage, owners Don and Jenny Hartford have built the winery’s reputation on limited-production, handmade, single-vineyard Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Old Vine Zinfandels from some of Northern California’s greatest vineyards. Hartford Family Winery is located in the town of Forestville, roughly 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. This is the heart of the famed Russian River Valley. In addition to their own estate, Hartford harvests fruit from a handful of prized vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Carneros, Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley. These are all high-reputation, low-yielding, sustainably-farmed sites situated in cool-climate sub-regions. Without exception, Hartford’s wines are intense, thought provoking and expressive of both variety and terroir. They have been served at the White House on many occasions and are staples on “Reserve” wine lists around the country. Since 2011, Jeff Stewart, a specialist in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel, has been in charge of winemaking.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks (2020 Vintage)

"The 2020 Chardonnay Russian River Valley was barrel fermented and matured 10 months in 28% new oak. It's composed of a blend of fruit from neighborhoods across the Russian River Valley: Middle Reach, Green Valley, Laguna Ridge, Santa Rosa Plain and Sebastopol Hills. It has a nose of white peaches and lime peel with touches of toast, dark spice and roasted almonds. The palate is lush and satiny, with hedonistic, spicy fruits and fresh acidity that makes this super easy to drink."

92/100 Jeb Dunnuck (2020 Vintage)

"An amalgam of all their single vineyard wines, the 2020 Chardonnay Russian River Valley is fresh with green pear liquor, flint, and white flowers. The palate is snappy on the finish, with lemon pith, ripe green apple skin, and wet stone."

94/100 Wine Enthusiast (2019 Vintage)

"There may be no better bang for your buck in Russian River Valley Chardonnay. Rich, unctuous and velvety, it is expansive and balanced, with lush layers of peach and pear dusted in nutmeg. The oak is well-integrated and contributes cohesive elements of baking spice."
