Its Origins
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

"When you receive 300 New Zealand wines in the post and you also love the Loire Valley, a showing of just five Chenin Blancs is a little sad. The 2021 Chenin Blanc Wrekin is Simon Waghorn's interpretation of this site in the southern valleys of Marlborough. It offers a rich, full bodied expression that's round and proud. Pastry and subtle nutty characters plus the wine's curved edges, all point towards wild fermentation and maturation on lees in oak. The portion produced in stainless steel, provides a counterpoint to the oaked selection, allowing the pure and delicate apple and citrus fruit to sing. The phenolics are handled well by handpicking, whole bunch pressing and only using the free run juice. The variety's natural crisp acidity has been well matched by 5g/L of residual sugar, leaving a dry and balanced conclusion. Delightful now but will continue to develop more lanolin and savory characters with bottle age." Drink 2023 - 2032

"Made from grapes grown on a loess clay slope and partially barrel-fermented with wild yeasts. Only free-run juice is used, to retain purity. Delicately luscious chenin blanc with quince, green apple, stone fruits. Delicious wine with power, purity, poise and the ability to age gracefully. Tangy wine in an off-dry style."
