Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)

"A gorgeous rendition of the variety; beautifully perfumed bouquet shows sweet cherry, dark plum, vanilla, cedar and subtle cocoa characters, leading to a concentrated palate that is refined and poised. The wine offers pristine fruit flavours together with a delightfully flowing mouthfeel, elegantly structured by juicy acidity and polished tannins. At its best: now to 2024."

5 Stars Raymond Chan (2016 vintage)

"Even, very dark, purple hued ruby-red colour, a tad lighter on the rim, and very youthful in appearance. The nose is gently packed with aromas of ripe dark raspberries with hints of blackberries, entwined with dark-red and violet florals, along with black and white pepper and spices. Medium-bodied, the palate has rich, sweet and juicy fruit flavours of dark raspberries and blackberries intermingling with aromatic red and violet florals, a subtle layering of black and white pepper with spice notes and nuances of iron-earth minerals. The palate has fine-grained tannin structure and balanced acidity supporting the fruit. The mouthfeel carries the juicy fruit to a soft-textured, dry, lingering finish. Match with Middle Eastern fare over the next 5-6+ years. 100% Syrah fruit from the Gimblett Gravels, hand-picked and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 35% new oak. 18.5-/20 Dec 2017 RRP $33.95" Drink 2017 - 2023+

91/100 Huon Hooke (2017 vintage)

"Medium to full red colour with a purple tint. The bouquet is plummy, fruit-driven and faintly reductive at first. The wine is medium-bodied, soft and balanced, with medium length and a soft finish. A trace of pepper-spice. 06 NOV 2019"
