In stock
A uniquely French-inspired Chardonnay from Central Otago. This special wine is the only Chardonnay to be released by the experts at Prophet's Rock. And like the superb "Antipodes" Pinot Noir, this one was crafted in collaboration with their friend and renowned Burgundian winemaker, Francois Millet from the mythical Comtes de Vogue in Chambolle-Musigny. Using imported equipment and genuinely French sensibilities, this wine is handled with an extraordinary delicacy that only enhances the refinement and mineral focus that is typical of the finest Central Otago Chardonnay. A unique white to decant now or confidently cellar for a decade plus. With only 143 cases made, the new Antipodes Blanc is a must-collect!

Its Origins

The Cuvee Aux Antipodes is a collaboration between Francois Millet (winemaker for 35 years at the legendary Comtes Georges de Vogüé in Burgundy) and Prophet's Rock in Central Otago. Established in 1999, Prophet’s Rock has become one of New Zealand’s most consistent boutique producers. Since the first release in 2018, this wine has been sourced exclusively from the small one hectare Chardonnay block on their Kopuwai Delta vineyard, located in the Pisa sub-region of Central Otago. This site has a mix of glacial and alluvial soil. Meticulous viticulture and the site’s low elevation help to ensure full ripeness and concentration. A strong focus on viticulture is the foundation of the winemaking approach. Yields are consistently managed to 25-30hl/ha or approximately 3.5-4ton/ha. All elements of the winemaking are directed by François who has formed a consistent approach to this parcel since 2018. The handpicked fruit is whole-bunch pressed and fermented in barrel using only indigenous ‘wild’ yeast. The wine then spends 17 months in barrel (16% new) and undergoes indigenous malolactic fermentation. The wine is bottled unfiltered under Diam cork.“This wine is the reflect of the Clutha River flowing just below, mineral, transparent and luminous. There is nothing exotic, “artificial” or “made up” about the expression of this wine. That shows again the link between what is emanating from the land, the feeling you have from it and the expression of the wines.” - François Millet.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2020 season was very cool—it snowed during vintage—and the wine spent an extended time in oak: 26 months, as opposed to 32 months for the 2019 and 17 months for the 2018. The yield this year was one barrel more than the 2019, another interesting point. So, the 2020 Cuvée Aux Antipodes Blanc feels the sweet spot in terms of minerality and savoriness—it is restrained and composed and aromatically voluminous. In the mouth, the wine touches both extremes. The composure of the fruit is enlivened by the electricity from the acidity, and the combination is a truly exciting and svelte drinking experience. It's really, really good. The phenolics are tightly woven and flowing through the finish, and these grab the flavor and propel it further into the finish. Remarkable wine. Superb. Nine barrels were made. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2023-2035

95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin (2021 Vintage)

"This was released prior to the 2020 and was a small production from only 1.8 hectares and six barrels (back to 2018 volumes). In the glass, the 2021 Cuvée Aux Antipodes Blanc has a freshly crushed curry leaf character, and behind this, it is sumptuous and complex, layered with ripe stone fruit, flowers and jasmine tea. The wine in the mouth is undulating and perfumed, a brilliant expression of the place. But also, it’s a triumph of making. There’s almond, salted pear, a whiff of blond tobacco, apple blossom and brine. A beauty. It spent two winters in barrel, with no bâtonnage, all wild ferments (slow, but the malolactic conversion did eventually get there). It was racked in the spring and bottled. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2023-2036"

98/100 Cameron Douglas (2018 Vintage)

"If Chardonnay were shoes – this would be in the Louboutin section! Totally captivating bouquet, exotic spices, elegance and finesse. Both the nose and palate offer a pure fruit attack with white peach and pear then apple and white flowers, very fragrant. A soft salty mineral layer adds texture, depth and complexity - and reflects the wild ferment technique. Satin through silk and fine creamy texture, fine tannins, long finish."
