Its Origins

Massolino are among the foremost Barolo producers, with deep history in Serralunga d'Alba. Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896 and was also the first to bring electricity to his village. Son Guiseppe and daughter Angela were likewise ahead of their time, in 1934 extending holdings in what are now regarded as some of Barolo's best crus - Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Whilst channelling their tradition, Massolino also utilise the heavier clay soils of Serralunga to bring a satisfying breadth, density and structure to their Barolo’s - which, balanced against their extreme refinement and expressive clarity - make them almost incomparable for the price.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

“The 2020 Barbaresco Albesani has more substance and depth than the straight Barbaresco. The differences between the two wines today aren’t that marked at the outset, but that comes with aeration. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, lavender, rose petal and sage develop with time in the glass. All of the richness and power of Albesani comes through. For readers who want to understand what Albesani is all about, this is it!" Drink 2025 - 2040

96/100 Decanter, Aldo Fiordelli

“Full of restraint on the nose, with smoky woodland, macerated flowers and chocolate wrapped up in a fresh, elegant redcurrant fruit. Very savoury on the palate, with fresh acidity and velvety, chewy, youthful tannins which are extremely precise and woven into the finish. It’s not an easy wine now due to the firmness of the structure, but it shows quality in terms of texture and liquorice length to consider it for the long haul. Massolino owns 2ha of 50-year-old vines in Albesani at 230m with a southwest exposition. The wine ferments and ages for 18 months in Slavonian oak." Drink 2024 - 2040

95/100 Kerin O’Keefe

"Made with grapes hailing from one of Barbaresco’s top vineyard sites, the 2020 Massolino Barbaresco Albesani has aromas of fragrant blue flower, tobacco and eucalyptus along with a whiff of tilled earth. Firmly structured, the youthfully austere, full-bodied palate delivers ripe raspberry, cranberry and licorice before closing on notes recalling bitter almond and salty mineral. Tightly knit, fine-grained tannins provide the backbone." Drink 2028 - 2038
