2020 Chasse-Spleen Moulis en Medoc

91 Points Decanter
In stock
Perhaps the definitive expression of this small Medoc appellation, the Chasse Spleen is also a great example of the modern Cru Bourgeois estate making better wine than many of its higher-ranked and more famous neighbours. With serious structure and aging potential, the chasse-Spleen offers real value for lovers of Cabernet-led Bordeaux.

Its Origins

Château Chasse-Spleen is the leading Moulis estate along with Château Poujeaux. Although it is classified only as a Cru Bourgeois, it regularly outperforms many of the Médoc's more renowned classed growths. There are two theories behind the château's rather unusual name: firstly, that, when Lord Byron visited the estate in 1821, he remarked `Quel remède pour chasser le spleen`. Secondly, that it is named after Baudelaire's poem, Spleen. Chasse-Spleen's wines were always noteworthy, though the quality improved dramatically with its acquisition by the Taillan Group, which also owns Château Haut-Bages-Libéral, in 1976. It was run by Bernadette Villars until she and her husband were killed in an accident while hiking in the Pyrénées in 1992. The property is now run by her daughter Claire. Chasse-Spleen's wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. It is matured in oak barriques (40% new) for 18 months and is bottled unfiltered. Chasse-Spleen wines are typically deeply-coloured and full-bodied on the palate, displaying oodles of ripe, black fruit, minerals and sometimes hints of chocolate.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Decanter, Jane Anson

"Bright fruit on the attack, and this is a well constructed wine with ambition. 2.5% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. A yield of 37.5 hl/ha." Drink 2025 - 2038

89-91/100 Vinous, Neal Martin

"The 2020 Chasse-Spleen offers attractive wild strawberry, blackberry and rose petal scents on the nose, which is well defined and very cohesive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, a smooth texture and cedar and leather notes infusing the red fruit. I am just seeking a little more backbone and grip on the finish of this Chasse-Spleen, although it should still give 15–20 years of drinking pleasure." Drink 2027 - 2042

88-90/100 Wine Cellar Insider, Jeff Leve

"Tobacco, herbs, flowers and red fruits combine on the nose. On the medium-bodied palate, this classic styled wine delivers bright, fresh red fruits, soft tannins and a crisp, almost crunchy red berry finish."
