2019 Neudorf Moutere Pinot Gris
Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere.The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

On the palate - white spices and brown pear, warming alcohol with contrasting refreshing acidity, a core of fruit, superfine chalky tannins, mineral and floral. This pure fruited wine has a lot to offer with balance, weight, fruit, spice and generosity all evenly paced through the wine, quite complex and definitely fine. "Intense, bright-fruited nose that promises more on the palate than simple spiciness. Quite substantial and serious for a New Zealand Pinot Gris (which have in the past often been too sweet). This wine has lots to give and reminds me more of a good, dry Alsace version than anything Italian. Quite a peacock's tail on the end. No hurry to drink. Superior. Single vineyard on clay gravels, low crop, spontaneous fermentation, 30% old-barrel fermentation, unfined, vegan (all such information given in an admirably concise fashion on the back label)."
