Mills Reef’s top Chardonnay is a rich but elegant wine, with an impressive weight of ripe stonefruit and a generous and slightly oily palate. With a drink-now ripeness balanced by bright acidity and classy barrel aging, the Elspeth is built for early pleasure or further development in cellar.

Its Origins

Mills Reef Winery was established in 1989 by the Preston family. Through commitment and dedication to excellence, the Mills Reef brand has established itself as one of New Zealand's premium labels with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah. The winery is located on 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a semi-rural setting, just 5 minutes drive from Tauranga's CBD. The vineyards are located in the Hawke’s Bay area, and two of the flagship vineyards, the Mere Road Vineyard and the Mills Reef Trust Vineyard are located right in the heart of the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels. The Mere Road is a 16 hectare block painstakingly managed for low yields to produce the very best grapes for the multi-award winning ‘Elspeth’ and ‘Reserve’ wines.

What The Critics Say

Top Ten Chardonnays, Cuisine Magazine 2019 (2017 vintage)

"Charming and well-defined with an exquisite youthful colour. The bouquet is engaging and accented with some with smoky notes and a toasty warmth. The structure is restrained yet the fruit is present which is the hallmark of excellence in winemaking."

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)

"Bold yet elegant flagship chardonnay with grapefruit, tree fruit, citrus, struck flint, ginger and toasted nut flavours. A bright, fresh wine with a backbone of lively acidity. Good now but with a promising future."

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2017 vintage)

"White and yellow fleshed stone fruits, grapefruit peel, tropical fruit moments and plenty of wood spices, toasty oak and gravel soil aromas. On the palate - full bodied and dry, warm, fruity and spicy with flavours that reflect the nose. Some wood tannins along with oak spices add texture and depth as well as complexity and power. A wine still on its journey to full harmony, well made, lengthy and commanding. Decant for service with best drinking from late 2020 through 2025."
