A major discount on this Champion Syrah that was sourced from the famous Clayvin vineyard. This outstanding red won the top trophy at the 2022 NZ Organic Wine Show! This stunning success may be partly because the vintage of 2019 was so great in the Clayvin, where crops and quality were both so good that Giesen had enough to release the top Clayvin label and still supply their Organic Syrah entirely from that site! With juicy bright fruits and many layers of savoury interest, the 2019 Giesen Organic is a serious Syrah for a special, one-off price. Grab this outstanding red.

Its Origins

Giesen Wines are a long established label on the New Zealand scene. But as the family have gained expertise and expanded into personal projects - such as Marcel Giesen’s little known but lauded boutique Waipara estate, Bell Hill - the Giesen label too has shifted to capture their deep expertise in terroir and technique by adding new high-investment, single vineyard offerings such as those from the "revered" Clayvin vineyard, made famous by Fromm wines. The three German brother’s Alex, Theo and Marcel came to New Zealand to establish their first Riesling vineyards in Canterbury. In a then-small market, the Geisen brand grew with the times to take a position as one of New Zealand’s leading producers, and still enjoys a significant local and international distribution for various levels of high quality wine in many varieties and styles. Their new mid and upper level offerings are gaining significant recognition: wines like the Clayvin Pinot Noir is not only from great terroir but beautifully styled, placing it second to none among New Zealand’s premium examples of the grape.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"A delicious bouquet and palate with aromas and flavours of dark olive and black currant, there's a fine dried herb quality then flavours of baked field mushroom, a smoky pepper quality then flavours of leather and dark plum, five spice and anise. Great texture and polish from tannins and acidity leading to a lengthy finish. Still youthful so no hurry with best drinking from 2024 through 2032+."

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Gorgeously pristine and inviting, the wine shows Black Doris plum, blueberry, violet, clove and toasted almond characters on the nose. The palate displays beautifully rounded mouthfeel and fleshy texture, wonderfully complemented by succulent fruit intensity and fine polished tannins. Splendidly harmonious and elegant with a persistent silky finish. At its best: now to 2029. Certified organic. $40.00. www.giesen.co.nz. Oct 2021."

92/100 James Suckling

"Black plums, violets and olive brine followed by curing spices and crushed rocks. Medium- to full-bodied, firm yet finely-grained tannins with good acidity backbone. A hint of toast in the finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
