2019 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Monvigliero

A wonderful cru from the top of the boutique Barolo food chain. Monvigliero is the most prestigious cru in Verduno, an austere and complex red which is produced from 45 year old vines on Fratelli Alessandria's wonderful, south-facing slope of calecerous limestone. A treasure from the family's most prized site, the Monvigliero is a special treasure to secret away for the medium to very long term.

Its Origins

Crowning the small hilltop village of Verduno, the elegant 18th century cantina Fratelli Alessandria produces approx 5,000 wine cases from 14 hectares; including the wine crus of Monvigliero in Verduno & Gramolere in Monforte d'Alba in Piedmont. Their Barolo wines were recognised by King Carlo Alberto in 1843, identifying a notable quality that continues to be enhanced by the arrival of 5th generation Vittore, aside his uncle Alessandro and father Gian Battista. They are also proud producers of the Pelaverga wine, a charming and elegant pepper-scented thing from grapes grown almost in exclusivity around Verduno. -- Vittore's arrival in 2001, post commercial and oenological studies at Torino University, coincided with a period of positive change. 'More attention to detail' is how Vittore explains the improvements that have taken place over the past decade. No more so than in the vineyard, now a picture of health and source of bright fruit from appropriately low yields. 2001 was also the year that their single Monforte cru 'Gramolere' was released, echoing a regional trend. In the cantina: new static stainless steel tanks, better temperature control, the addition of a few French 500 litre tonneaux, while persevering with 15/20 day wild yeast fermentations & 30 hectolitre botte (slavonian & French oak) ageing have all combined to promote sales of bottled wine and thereby reduce their reliance upon sales to the bulk market; now down to approx 15% of production.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero shows a medium dark garnet appearance with an especially focused quality of fruit. There is wild cherry and Japanese plum, but the Monvigliero cru also delivers crushed rose, earthy iris root, candied orange peel with clove and dustings of black pepper. The wine is exceedingly silky and polished in texture, but its inherent complexity is never diminished. It should be interesting to revisit this bottle after the 10-year mark. This estate was the first to bottle a Monvigliero in 1978, and today 7,000 bottles are made." Drink 2025 - 2045

94-96/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero, tasted from barrel, is fabulous. Silky and elegant, with tons of energy, the Monvigliero is showing beautifully today, even as a sample from tank with low SO2 typical of this stage pre-bottling. Even so, all the translucent finesse of Monvigliero comes through loud and clear. Crushed red berry fruit, chalk, blood orange, mint and white pepper lend brightness. The 2019 is shaping up to be a real beauty. It's one of those young wines that is very hard to spit." Drink 2029 - 2044

18/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Verduno. Lustrous mid-to-deep ruby. Layers of ripe red fruit with savoury, saline hints. A sensational palate of richness and elegance, with bags of polished tannins that follow the fruit rather than dominating it. Layered finish that shows incredible depth. (WS)." Drink 2023 - 2032
