Its Origins

Viñedos del Contino was created by Cvne and the family owners of the state in 1973, establishing the “château” concept in the Rioja region. The estate embraces vineyards and wines, and is rooted in an ancestral home inside a bend in the Ebro river. Its wines are made exclusively from the stocks planted on its 62 hectares located in Laserna, near the town of Laguardia in the Rioja Alavesa wine making region. The grapes for Contino Garnacha come from the old plots of Pajera, which has calcareous soils and was planted in 1980; Central, planted in 1950 on alluvial and sandy soils; and Lentisco, which is stony and was planted in 1940. The Garnacha is hand harvested, with selection of the grapes taking place both in the field and on a sorting table once in the winery. The grapes are placed into a French oak vat to allow a pre-fermentation cold soak and until fermentation began spontaneously. After 8 or 9 days the wine is then left in contact with the skins for a further 15 days. They then rack to a 2000 litre Stockinger fudre and to twelve 500 litre barrels. Finally, it is aged and allowed to refine in a concrete vat for a further five months.

What The Critics Say

93/100 James Suckling

"There’s real purity and beauty to this, with strawberry, cherry and dried-flower character. Then it changes to pure black cherries. Full-bodied, yet linear and racy, with very fine tannins and a vivid finish. Drinkable now, but better in two or three years."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding MW

"Mid crimson. This is full of flavour, finely dry tannins. May not be stereotypical Rioja but it's a full-bodied, fresh and delicious Garnacha with more moderate alcohol and freshness than you might get in the southern Rhône, for example. Lovely bite of freshness balances the rich sweetness of fruit. Unusually, 100% Garnacha, harvested 18 September 2019. Fermentation 14 days in 10,000-litre foudre. Aged 12 months, 75% in 500-litre barrels and 25% in 2,000-litre foudre. Bottled 29 March 2022. RS 1.5 g/l, TA 4.24 g/l, pH 3.26. GV. (JH)."

93/100 Decanter, Amaya Cervera

"Garnacha specialist Jorge Navascués, who took over winemaking at Contino in 2017, has left his mark with this red, which displays herbal, sarsaparilla and kirsch aromas. There is full ripeness here – as might be expected from this beautiful property, rich in alluvial soils stretching along a meander of the Ebro River just 10 minutes’ drive from Logroño. Yet the palate is subtle and round, with a lovely floral character. A beautiful expression of Garnacha." Drink 2021-2026
