A classic, lush-styled Chardonnay but with lots of structure, character and complexity. Pegasus have older vines and, as the first well-known label to establish themselves there, have long experience in Waipara's ideal conditions for Chardonnay. It shows in this consistently expressive and impressive icon of a wine, which will drink beautifully now or cellar for quite some time.

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Intense, richly-textured chardonnay with ripe peach, stone fruits, saline-mineral, struck flint, vanilla, brioche and nutty oak flavours. A generously-proportioned and complex chardonnay. 26 MAR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2024

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Stunning and immensely complex, the wine shows ripe peach, grapefruit, vanillin oak, flint and oatmeal characters on the nose, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate that offers outstanding depth and richness, backed by silky texture and bright acidity, finishing impressively long and gloriously satisfying. At its best: now to 2026. $44.00. www.pegasusbay.com. March 2020." Drink 2020 - 2026

92/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Bold toasty, woody, nutty and fruity bouquet with intense aromas of brazil nut and baked yellow peach, vanilla and baked custard, red apple and a creamy-cheese note. On the palate - full-bodied, creamy and toasty, no mistaking the sweet vanilla oak moments, baked goods and yellow orchard fruit flavours. Medium acidity, fine wood tannins, gently salivating acidity and lengthy finish. Familiar and very easy to imbibe. A lovely drink now and through 2023."
