Its Origins
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive and for that reason alone, leaving aside the clear skill and vision of the Sabons, that we are delighted to take on these excellent wines in our listings.
What The Critics Say
17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming
"100% Grenache. Aged for 12 months in oak. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Fresh red fruit on the nose, multi-layered spices on the palate providing complexity, and some burnt sugar notes on the finish, like chewy crème caramel topping. Interesting and complex, with good persistence. (RH)." Drink 2022 - 2038
95-97/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinsky (2016 vintage)
"Tasted from a single foudre representing the La Crau Est lieu-dit, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin comes across as even richer and creamier than the 2015, yet with brighter acids and similar spice. Red fruit lingers, morphing toward chocolate as the finish goes on and on."
95/100 Wine Spectator (2015 vintage)
"Pretty, with cassis and warm raspberry puree notes carried by silky but persistent structure, while rooibus tea, blood orange and incense accents fill the background. The streamlined finish pulls everything together, letting the silky, perfumed feel sail on. Best from 2020 through 2040. J.M."
