Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Bob Campbell
"Impressively pure and powerful chardonnay with salty, mineral, grapefruit, citrus, bran biscuit and cashew nut flavours. A very classy wine that’s complex and linear. Layered flavours are supported by tangy acidity that helps drive a lingering finish. Will age well." Drink 2016 - 2024
97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"This is exceptional. Elegant yet powerful, the wine is impeccably composed showing white nectarine, lemon peel, vanilla, cedar and brioche aromas on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate that is focused and expansive at the same time. The wine offers layers of fine texture and pristine fruit flavours, beautifully complemented by stylish oak infusion and seamlessly integrated acidity. One for the long haul, this is a spectacular chardonnay in the making. At its best: 2019 to 2026. $70.00. www.sacredhill.com. June 2017." Drink 2019 - 2026
19.5-/20 Raymond Chan
"The nose is very elegant in presentation with a rich and concentrated core of ripe yellow stonefruits and aromatic citrus fruit, unfolding mealy and nutty detail, interwoven harmoniously with spicy and toasty oak nuances. This has great finesse and intensity, building in penetration with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate has elegant, but penetrating and intensely concentrated flavours of citrus and yellow stonefruits melded harmoniously with layers of creamy barrel-ferment and nutty, toasty oak, the flavours discreetly mouthfilling. The mouthfeel fresh and taut with the concentrated, near exotic fruit the feature, and the palate is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity, with underlying power and drive. The wine carries to a very long and sustained, concentrated finish of poise and finesse. This is superb. Match with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 5-6 years. First made in 1995. Hand-picked Mendoza clone fruit, own rooted and 26 y.o., from the ‘Riflemans’ vineyard, Dartmoor Valley, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 80% new French oak barriques, undergoing 100% MLF. 707 dozen made. 19.5/20 Jul 2017 RRP $69.99."
