An intense yet refined Syrah from the masters of Hawkes Bay, Sacred Hill. Underneath this legendary label lies another punchy yet perfectly crafted wine. Perfumed with black fruits, earthy licorice and florals, this offers a palate that is mouth-coating yet long, broad and structured. European stylistic overtones carry through, but with a good dose of antipodean breadth and sensuousness. Serious stuff -- and another vintage to collect from Sacred Hill.

Its Origins

Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Very dense, rich and powerful red with strong black pepper, blackcurrant compote, liquorice, and spicy oak flavours, which conceal many other characters that will no doubt emerge in time. Strong sweet fruit makes this a delight to drink now. Patience will, however, be rewarded. 9/9/2017." Drink 2017 - 2025

97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Sweetly fruited and beautifully perfumed, this gorgeous syrah from the Gimblett Gravels district shows blackberry, dark plum, clove and toasted almond characters with nuances of tapenade and black pepper. The palate exhibits outstanding fruit purity and concentration, combined with fabulous spicy/savoury complexity, impeccably framed by polished tannins. At its best: 2019 to 2030. $60.00. www.sacredhill.com. June 2017." Drink 2019 - 2030

19.5/20 Raymond Chan

"Very dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter edged, youthful in appearance. This has a beautifully fragrant and aromatic nose of ripe blackberries melded with a layering of black and violet florals, and a fine core of ripe black plums, liquorice and spices with hints if black pepper. Some herbal complexities from the whole bunch add to the aromatic array. This has finesse, beauty and seamless volume. Medium-full bodied, the palate has very rich and lusciously refined fruit flavours of blackberries and black plums entwined with exotic florals, liquorice, spices and dark herbs. The mouthfeel is smooth and seamless and the wine flows along a satin-like line, with wonderfully refined, powdery tannin extraction. The wine leads to a blossoming perfumed and aromatic finish. This will keep 10-12+ years. Fruit from the ‘Deerstalkers’ vineyard, Gimblett Gravels, indigenous yeast fermented with up to 20% whole clusters to 13.0% alc., the wine spending 20-30 days on skins and aged 16 months in 35% new French oak barrels and puncheons. 283 dozen made. 19.5/20 Sep 2017 RRP $59.99." Drink 2017 - 2029
