Its Origins

Chateau de Fieuzal like many Bordeaux estates is named in honor of one of the earlier owners who managed the estate at the start of the nineteenth century. After that, the Bordeaux wine property was owned by the Griffon family. The Griffon’s, who were lucky to have connections to Pope Léon XIII in Bordeaux, were able to fill the Vatican ’s cellars with their wines from the Pessac Leognan area. de Fieuzal was purchased by the well-known Ricard family. The Ricard’s owned multiple Bordeaux wine estates including Domaine de Chevalier and Malartic Lagraviere . Today, Chateau de Fieuzal is owned by Lochlann Quinn, the chairman of Allied Irish Banks who purchased Chateau de Fieuzal in 2001 from interestingly another bank. The 39 hectare vineyard of Chateau de Fieuzal has a terroir of gravel, sand, clay and small white stones in the soils. The Pessac Leognan vineyard is planted to red and white grape varietals. For the red wines, the vineyard is planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon , 33% Merlot , 4.5% Cabernet Franc and 2.5% Petit Verdot . On average, the vines are 35 years of age. But they have old vines as well. Their oldest vines are Petit Verdot, which were planted all the way back in 1908. Known for its whites, the vines are planted to an even mix of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon . The vine density is on average, 8,300 vines per hectare.

What The Critics Say

94-96+/100 Robertparker.com, William Kelley

“Huge strides have been made here recently, with much more focus on brighter flavours and gentle winemaking. The quality of the fruit this year was so even that 75% of the production is the grand vin, the highest ever proportion here. The cumulative rainfall at Chateau Fieuzal was only 385 millimeters in 2022, compared to 753 millimeters in 2021 and 743 millimeters in 2020. But this did not prevent Stephen Carrier and his team from making a fresh and energetic 2022 de Fieuzal, bursting with aromas of violet, iris, menthol and crunchy wild berries mingled with hints of coniferous forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, it’s pristinely balanced and beautifully layered, exhibiting a vibrant palate that’s deep, tensile and elegant, concluding with a mouthwateringly mineral finish. This estate is achieving things no one would have thought possible a decade ago.”

94-95/100 James Suckling

“A crunchy and energetic wine from here this year with black berry, black cherry and crushed stone character. Medium-bodied with lively acidity and a fine tannin background.”

92-94/100 Wine Cellar Insider, Jeff Leve

"Flowers, cigar wrapper, pepper, cedar, cocoa, spice, and red with black currants open the nose. On the medium-bodied palate, initially you notice the freshness in the ripe, sweet, cherries, with their elegance, lift and purity. There is a symmetry, and vibrancy in the fruits, finishing with a shot of licorice, cocoa, and plums that stick with you. The wine blends 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. 13.2% ABV. Yields were 32 hectoliters per hectare." Drink 2025 - 2045
