2022 Astrolabe Kekerengu Sauvignon Blanc

95 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A serious Sauvignon Blanc from the limestone soils of the Kekerengu Coast. These vines are situated on the east coast to the south of Marlborough, where the climate and unique soil composition contributes to Astrolabe's finest and most impressive wines. Elegant and weighty, the Kekerengu Coast might be the best of their classy, European-inspired Sauvignons.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

”Complex and floral, saline and fruity, distinctive with a sense of place display. A focused, fruity, araietal and enticing wine with flavours and textures of grapefruit flesh and apple, lemon rind and wild seaside flowers. A line of savoury salty air textures layer in on the palate with a seagrass and roasted bell-pepper quality, fresh red apple and plenty of acidity. Fresh and lively, new and lengthy. Best drinking from late 2023 through 2029.”

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Restrained wine with gentle herbal, grapefruit, salty and spicy flavours supported by mellow acidity. Appealing wine with slightly muted varietal character. I would like to see a bit more punch 21 OCT 2022." Drink 2022 - 2026

92/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb MW

"From: New Zealand Whites: The Great Divide (Apr 2023) The intensity and salinity of the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc are a nod to the Kēkerengū Coast, a remote and exposed part of the Marlborough wine region. It is varietal in its elderflower and green capsicum-like flavor profile, but its structure is equally, if not more, enticing. It is firm and driven with a pithy, grapefruit-like acidity providing pizzazz on the uplifting finish." Drink 2022 - 2026
