About 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre
Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.

"Sourced from 30- to 50-year-old vines grown on clay-limestone, the fruit is fermented in tronconic stainless steel tanks then aged for 18 months in foudres, demi-muids and concrete tanks on its fine lees. It has a lovely finesse of violets and berry fruits, with very fine tannins, piercing acidity and a long, tapered finish. Subtle spicy elements bring interest. "The 2015 Rasteau Prestige is yet another bottling from this domaine that punches above its weight. Aged half in foudre and half in concrete, it shows off attractive scents of garrigue and anise, then rounds out the full-bodied palate with black cherry fruit and a long, richly textured finish. -- It was the end of a long day by the time I arrived at Andre Romero's Domaine La Soumade in Rasteau. Despite the late hour, the patriarch himself was there to greet me, along with his son, Frédéric. It had been close to ten years since my previous visit, and I'm pleased to report that the wines have grown more refined and elegant over that time."
