A refined yet powerful Rasteau from hometown experts, Soumade. The Prestige is grown on the fringes of the Ventabren alpine terrace, which adds limestone content to the famous yellow and blue clay (water-retaining properties of clay help fruit in the area's baking heat). The result is a Grenache-led wine that is rich and structured but also bright and perfumed. From specialists in Rasteau, this cuvee is a serious delight.

Its Origins

Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"The 2017 Rasteau Prestige (30- to 50-year-old vines) has put on some weight during the past year, while retaining the charm it had as a tank sample. Pepper-cured meat notes accent black cherries in the full-bodied, expansive wine. It's plush and cuddly yet still structured enough to carry the ripe flavors to a long, vibrant finish. The blend is 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, aged in a combination of foudres and concrete tanks. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes." Drink 2020 - 2026

91/100 Decanter, Matt Walls

"Sourced from 30- to 50-year-old vines grown on clay-limestone, the fruit is fermented in tronconic stainless steel tanks then aged for 18 months in foudres, demi-muids and concrete tanks on its fine lees. It has a lovely finesse of violets and berry fruits, with very fine tannins, piercing acidity and a long, tapered finish. Subtle spicy elements bring interest. A very elegant style of Rasteau, highly drinkable." Drink 2019 - 2021

Robert Parker

“The superstar of Rasteau is Andre Romero, who produces five cuvees of drop-dead delicious red wine.”
