2011 D'Yquem

(en primeur price all up final landed cost due in mid 2014) The 2011 has a clear silvery gold hue, perhaps not quite as deep as I recall the 2010 last year. The bouquet is very fragrant and well‐defined, with scents of wild honey, honeysuckle and a touch of vanilla. It is a refined, sedate and beautifully focused bouquet that does not need to show off. The palate displays superb weight in the mouth, even though at first it seems almost understated. Yet there is clearly a high level of spicy, botrytized fruit with notes of honey, orange zest and a touch of mandarin. There is no explosion on the finish; the 2011 is rather a lesson in control, complexity and nuance. It is utterly seductive. Drink 2016‐2040+.score 96-98 Neal Martin – The en primeur sample of Château d'Yquem Sauternes 2011 is also presented at Cheval-Blanc. Its usual classic blend of 80/20 Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc captures the beautiful cut and freshness of the vintage, with blazing pineapple, white peach, yellow apple and melon flavors that are remarkably light on their feet. Blanched ginger root, cherry blossom and light citrus notes dance through the finish. The wine is already showing terrific range and purity in a very, very stylish frame. "Despite its distinctive aromas of peaches and yellow fruit, the fragrance of this Spätlese is tastefully seductive rather than overwhelming. On the palate the Brauneberger takes on a more exotic expression with sweet notes of grapefruit and orange. It’s rich, rounded and textured with superb fruit intensity, finishing beautifully long and delicious. At its best: now to 2018. $25.00."


2014 Amisfield Central Otago Pinot Gris

"The 2014 vintage (4*) was estate-grown and hand-picked at Pisa, in the Cromwell Basin, and mostly fermented and lees-aged in tanks; 30 per cent of the blend was fermented with indigenous yeasts in large, seasoned French oak barrels. Fragrant and full-bodied, it is well-rounded, with strong, ripe stonefruit flavours, hints of spices and oak, gentle sweetness (11.5 grams/litre residual sugar), and lots of drink-young appeal." 2014 Felici Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi

Andrea Felici is an extremely quality-focused Italian winery. They only produce wines from the Verdicchio grape. They consider it to be the world's finest white wine grape and treat it accordingly. All grapes are hand harvested into small baskets, the wine is fermented cool in stainless steel to preserve aromatics, with three months aging on yeast lees adding texture and body. Their 'Pietragrigia' is benchmark Verdicchio, medium-bodied, easy-drinking with soft citrus fruit, a bright minerality and classic almond notes. We tried a bottle of this as soon as it arrived in and were blown away by the sheer quality and drinkability of this wine. Magnificant. "Medium straw-yellow. White flowers and almond dominate the nose. Enters the mouth juicy and fresh, then turns bigger and rounder, showing a suave, glyceral mouthfeel to the ripe apple and pear flavors. Laser-like acidity keep this wine light and lively on the palate. The finish is long and extremely saline."91 Ian d'Agata


2012 Cape Mentelle Margaret River Chardonnay

95/100 from Halliday and listed at $41AUD. He writes "Pale straw-green; grapefruit/citrus fruit is the outer layer of the wine; inside are white peach/stone fruit flavours, and largely inside these two layers is the oak and some nutty touches associated with that oak. Since all the layers are translucent, the net result is a fruit-driven chardonnay of considerable elegance." Also 94/100 from Ray Jordan


2014 Dry River Martinborough Gewurztraminer

98/100 from Bob Campell "This is a truly gorgeous Gewurztraminer with wonderful concentration and peacocks tail-like display of subtle flavours on its incredibly lengthy finish. Its a heady mix of floral, spice and exotic fruit characters which promises to get even more exciting with bottle age. This wine supports my long-held belief Gewurztraminer is Dry Rivers most outstanding wine."


2013 Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay

"Hunting Hill is a vineyard that was first planted in 1982 and became a significant part of the original Kumeu River Chardonnay blend. Occupying the slope overlooking Maté’s Vineyard, it has always contributed lovely ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. Hunting Hill was replanted in 2000 and is now even better than before, giving beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive, mealy minerality. This wine has fragrant lemon/lime blossom aromas on the nose that typify the lovely perfume we always get from Hunting Hill.. The 2013 vintage was affected by a spring frost and the subsequent yields approximately 1/2 of the usual. The summer was one of the best on record and the grapes were beautifully clean, ripe and intensely flavoured. This has created a wine of intense concentration and complexity that will be very long lived." Michael Brajkovich.


2014 Framingham Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Normal RRP $22. Metro Top 100 Wines - 2015, Gold Medal Selections Mondiales des Vins Canada, Gold Medal Sommelier Wine Awards 2015, Gold Medal Global Masters Competition London 2014 and 92/100 from Bob Campbell writing "Tangy Sauvignon Blanc with a mix of ripe passion fruit and guava with less ripe grapefruit and green capsicum characters. There is also a suggestion of nutty lees characters. Quite a richly textured wine thanks in part to a barrel fermented component." Smart sauvignon buying.
