2014 Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Gris

Another outstanding wine from the quality focused Astrolabe Winery. Only the highest quality fraction of free run juice has been used in this drier Pinot Gris, with most from whole cluster pressed hand picked bunches. "Pear and quince, light peach and citrus rind and a whiff of cardamom and nougat are on the nose with a palate that is pure and focussed with a delicacy of structure, finishing crisp and dry. Stonefruit and pear flavours dominate, followed by some light citrus.


2013 Pepperjack Barossa Shiraz

Top placed Aussie Shiraz in the Cuisine Aussie Shiraz Tasting beating out some hefty competition. 85 wines were tasted. Normal RRP $25 and it sells in Aussie for $30AUD. Made by the Saltram winery, where chief winemaker Nigel Dolan's ( twice the Jimmy Watson's Trophy Winner ) sources fruit from a collection of old Shiraz vines across the Barossa Valley floor and the cooler Eden Valley. Cuisine writes "From the historic Saltram winery, this deeply coloured young Barossa shiraz straddles tradition and modernity beautifully. It has floral and spice aromas, deep plum and berry fruit, restrained oak, medium body, silky smoothness, lovely flavour intensity, and perfectly measured tannins in delectable balance. It all adds up to a superb essay in shiraz, and the price tag makes it a steal." Listed in Cuisine at $25 so $18.99 is a further steal!

2014 Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

95/100 from Bob Campbell in Gourmet Traveller Magazine "Astrolabe earns my vote for being New Zealand's leading Sauvignon Blanc maker. A blend of wines from the four distinctly different Marlborough sub-regions: Awatere Valley, Waihopi, Wairau Valley and Kekerengu. The result is about as true a representation of a regional style that I could imagine. Flavoursome sauvignon blanc with gooseberry, red capsicum, nectarine and lime, plus a suggestion of passionfruit flavours. Classy wine with an etheral texture and lingering finish. 2013 Craggy Range Kidnappers Vineyard Chardonnay

Normally $27. Made using 'the traditional techniques of Chablis', the 2013 vintage is a cracker. "This vineyard is located right on the Pacific Ocean and whenever you visit you can smell the briney ocean scents. The new spin is to take fantastic Chardonnay grapes from this cool vineyard, pick them when the flavours are fresh and alive, and make the wine as if we were making Chablis, fresh, citrusy with a long paper-like/nutty texture and not much oak and always a hint of the sea. No surprise drink with seafood on your plate”.


2013 Beach House Gimblett Gravels Cabernet/ Malbec

Absolutely outstanding value for a wine that picked up TROPHY at the 2014 Hawke’s Bay A&P Show where according to the judges this was the best Cabernet predominant blend from an outstanding vintage in Hawke’s Bay. A huge result for this dedicated producer whose wines are extremely well priced. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Malbec and 5% Cabernet Franc. "Deep colour. Intense cassis, dark chocolate aromas, with ginger spice, mocha, espresso notes. Well-concentrated robust wine with sweet plum fruit flavours, praline espresso notes and chalky long textures. Finishes firm with minerally inky liquorice leafy notes. Refreshing wine with lovely aromatic complexity, density and length. Now-2022, + 95/100 points Andrew Caillard MW


2013 Boneline Waipara Hell Block Riesling

10% and medium- dry in style. “Loving the new 2013 The Boneline Hellblock Riesling which comes from vines grown on a river terrace that is, apparently, as hot as hell during summer, which must be why it tastes so intense on the old Riesling citrusy flavour front. That delish’ bite of crisp acidity is what really drives my tastebuds wild, and creates a nervy core of interest in each sip of this lovely new wine from North Canterbury. The wine is made from grapes grown on 25 year old vines grown downstream from the White Gorge, which is carved out of terraces on the south bank of the Waipara River. Its makers, Tutton, Sienko and Hill, all say that they picked the grapes prior to sunburn to avoid phenolic development; for non-wine heads, that is another way of saying that they have avoided over ripeness, which can (in Riesling) lead to some strong aromas that can polarise people just a tad. This wine is driven by an intense lemon taste and really is a very fresh, youthful, yet-to-develop style that has great flavour intensity and a long life ahead” The Boneline is a new brand from some well experienced North Canterbury winemakers on Ram Paddock Road, North Canterbury, New Zealand. 2012 Tiberio Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in Abruzzo which is a region that borders the Adriatic coast in Central Eastren Italy. Montepulciano is characterised by its soft flavours, strong vivid purple colour and gentle tannins although this Montepulciano is a cut above the run of the mill and does sport fine grained tannins and concentrated flavours of dark plum, coffee and underbrush. Medium ruby-red. Red berry, sour red cherry and sweet spice aromas are lifted by a penetrating floral perfume. A real essence of unoaked Montepulciano on the palate, displaying outstanding sappy cut and precision to the perfumed flavors of cherry, red berries, minerals and aromatic spices. The building, juicy finish spreads out to saturate the palate, with the tannins remarkably fine-grained. I found this to be very Pinot Noir-like.91/100 -- Ian D'Agata
