A very satisfying red from old vines in provincial Spain. Here in Navarra they can grow wonderful Tempranillo, just like their southern neighbours in Rioja but without the same high price. Perfectly ripe fruit is given a gentle handling and aging in old oak to make Spanish red that is effortlessly ripe and succulent, but also refreshing and easy-drinking even with lighter food. Exceptional value!

Its Origins

Brothers Xabier, Iñaki and Mikel Sanz started this project with a 2007 Graciano but they almost immediately focused on recovering old Garnacha vineyards in the vicinity of Fitero in southern Navarra. Viña Zorzal currently owns and grows 40 hectares, 25 of which are traditional Garnacha bush vines; the remaining land is planted with Graciano and Tempranillo, some Garnacha Blanca and Chardonnay. Wines are made at the family winery in Corella which has been renamed Viña Zorzal. Garnacha-expert and winemaker Jorge Navascués consults for them. The landscape in this subarea of DO Navarra known as Ribera Baja — encompassing the first foothills of the Sistema Ibérico mountain range— differs widely from the distinctive Ebro Valley flatlands, thus the wines show excellent freshness and vibrancy.

"Old vines located in Fitero area. Clear, medium intensity, ruby colour wine. Clean, high intensity aromas of red fruit such us red cherry, strawberry, also black pepper and earthy notes. Dry and fresh, soft tannins and medium body. Red fruits flavours, mineral hints and a long finish. Ideal accompaniment for cured ham, stews, game and meat dishes."

"It's a ripe and fruit-forward red, a bit grapey, with aromas of plums, subtle spices and smoke, with a lactic touch. The palate is medium-bodied with flavors of sweet spices, ripe fruit and a warmish finish. The 2015 Tempranillo from the Navarra winery Viña Zorzal contains 5% Garnacha, but can still be labeled as a varietal wine, as the main grape is more than 85% of the blend. It's produced from grapes grown at Labastida and San Vicente de la Sonsierra that were fermented in stainless steel tanks, with indigenous yeasts and malolactic, and six months élevage in used French oak barriques. 5,000 bottles produced."
