Its Origins

The bearer of a remarkable story, Alex Kaufman was a Polish holocaust survivor who arrived in America with ‘nothing but a quarter in his shoe’ and rose from laboratory cleaner to Pharmaceutical boss. Having fallen in love with the beautiful climes of Central Otago, the elderly but energetic Kaufman established Kalex wines, the stewardship of which is now taken by his daughter Irene Kaufman. With genuine backing to focus on quality fruit and winemaking - with Theo Coles at the winemaking helm - Kalex wines pander not at all to the market but instead make superbly classy and distinctive wines, reflective of classic European taste but capturing in a very refined form that clean, bright fruit and herbal aspect engendered by Central Otago’s harsh alpine conditions.

"A copper/salmon coloured appearance - very bright and oozing with fine bubble. Quite a rich earthy and savory bouquet with a plenty of autolysis up front; fruit aromas include baked strawberry and quince with red apple nuances. On the palate - savory, crisp, earthy and dry - quite masculine in nature. The fruits do return for a wee wave, the wine seems built around its savory and bottle development characters. The mousse is bold and intense at first then subsides quickly to a quiet prickle. Overall - good, dry, very drinkable and should work well with food. In fact am off to a Thanksgiving lunch - I'll test its potential there." Drink 2019 - 2024

"Showing good complexity, the 2012 vintage (4*), currently on sale, was estate-grown in Central Otago. Pale pink/orange, with a fragrant, yeasty bouquet, it is crisp and lively, with peachy, strawberryish, yeasty flavours, and a dry (4.3 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. Ready."
