2014 Voyager Estate MJW Cabernet Sauvignon
96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot
Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.
What The Critics Say
96/100 The Real Review, Huon Hooke
"Medium to deep red colour with brick-red and purple reflections, the bouquet fine and stylish with violet and dark berry aromas, cassis and mixed spices. A lovely, elegant wine of intensity, line and length. Beautifully balanced and long, with seamless line and effortless balance. Outstanding. A wine that should richly reward medium to long-term cellaring. (This wine is a tribute to the founder, Michael Wright) 09 MAR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2041
"The current release (no 2015 was bottled), the 2014 MJW Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of fruit from the winery's Old Block (56%) and North Block (40%). That leaves room for 4% Petit Verdot. Cigar box and cassis aromas lead the way in this silky-smooth, medium to full-bodied offering. It finishes long and seductive, with lingering hints of cocoa powder. Drink it anytime over the next 15 years or so." Drink 2019 - 2035
93+/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"A selection of the best barrels from North Block 12 (planted 1995) and Old Block V9 (1978) with 4% estate-grown Petit Verdot. As an aside, we seem to be missing a review of the 2014 Estate Cabernet Merlot, so one of us should track that down… — Boysenberry, redcurrant, dark chocolate, menthol and cedar, some tobacco and floral perfume. It’s medium-bodied, sports a lovely mouth-perfume, good flavour, grainy gravelly tannin, and bright acidity, spicy biscuit oak in support. I like the wine, yet there’s a slight ‘hardness’ to it, and a separation of components (fruit/tannin/acidity) that gives me pause. Maybe it’s just me. Regardless, I feel it will be a *much* better wine in five or so years time." Drink 2024 - 2034+
