Its Origins
Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Ripe, weighty chardonnay with peach, tree fruit, struck flint, toast, baguette crust and spicy oak flavours. An attractive wine with a pleasingly silken texture and surprisingly lengthy finish. Good value at this price." Drink 2020 - 2026
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Aromas of French oak and yellow fleshed stone fruits, grapefruit peel and raw sugar, blond tobacco and warm crushed stones. On the palate - dry, full-bodied and tasty with flavours of orchard fruits and oak, medium + acidity and a noticeable bite of wood. Salivating and lightly saline with a fine tannins, an overall chalk-like texture and a lengthy finish. Well made, youthful and still on its journey to full integration and harmony. Best drinking from 2021 through 2025+."
93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2016 vintage)
"Elegant and refined, the delicately fragrant bouquet shows white stone fruit, lemon peel, rockmelon and nougat characters with nuances of vanilla and cedar. The palate is concentrated and finely textured, and displays lovely fruit purity combined with subtle spicy oak undertones. The wine is focused and tightly structured, promises to evolve gracefully. At its best: 2018 to 2021. $34.00. www.squawkingmagpie.co.nz. Aug 2017." Drink 2018 - 2021
