A serious Chardonnay from the Hawkes Bay stalwarts Squawking Magpie. Ranked by Bob Campbell as 4th out of 27 Hawkes Bay 2019 Chardonnays he's tasted. Whats more he also says this is good value and that's before we got a great discounted price on it. Named for the Gimblett Gravels vineyard that is Squawking Magpie's spiritual home, this label was not however sourced there but from superb alluvial soils west of Hastings. Here the wine acquires a little minerality but a lot of nice ripeness, resulting in a poised Chardonnay that is rounded by delicate oak and butterscotch tones. A satisfying and complete Hawkes Bay Chardy for the price.

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

Salivating and lightly saline with a fine tannins, an overall chalk-like texture and a lengthy finish. Well made, youthful and still on its journey to full integration and harmony.
