A great discount on this superb top Chardonnay from Hawkes Bay icons. Elephant Hill's new label Salome is sourced mostly from their original Te Awanga site, where only the best grapes bring lush white fruits and a feminine, gently floral and mineral feel. While the Salome's harmony and elegance make it very satisfying now, it wil also age beautifully. A nice price for this premium wine!

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Flagship chardonnay made only in top years from grapes grown in the coastal Te Awanga vineyard and Triangle vineyard at Bridge Pa. Quite a contrast to it stable mate, Sea Chardonnay. It is richer, weightier and even more complex with peach, grapefruit, citrus, nectarine, ginger, baguette crust and spicy oak. A very impressive wine with good cellaring potential, 29 MAY 2020." Drink 2020 - 2027

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"It’s immensely complex and captivating on the nose showing golden peach, grapefruit, vanillin oak and roasted hazelnut characters. The palate displays awesome concentration and focus, wonderfully supported by creamy mouthfeel and bright acidity. Youthful yet delectably appealing already. At its best: now to 2028. $75.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. June 2020." Drink 2020 - 2028

95/100 and "Outstanding", Cameron Douglas MS

"Elegant and sophisticated bouquet, complex and seductive. Aromas of white and yellow peach, red apple and apricot are layered between focused scents of new and aged barrel with a roasted nut and baked custard suggestion as well as vanilla and clove moments. On the palate - young, vibrant, tense and dry. Flavours reflect the nose with the orchard fruits then wood layers. The tension and poise - wood tannins and acidity - suggest a wine that needs to settle into cellar life for a while longer. Complex and compelling."
