Its Origins
Founded in 1980 by Andrew and Cynthia Hendry when the New Zealand wine industry was small and relatively unknown, Coopers Creek Vineyard has grown and matured over three decades into a top class winery with a strong international presence. It continues to innovate, particularly with new wine styles, introducing and pioneering promising new grape varieties that are ideal for cool climate regions. Viognier, Albariño, Arneis, Grüner Veltliner, Marsanne and Montepulciano are new varieties for New Zealand, but heading for stardom. Coopers Creek is satisfying a growing demand for these stylish varieties in addition to its longstanding pedigree with Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux reds.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
“Rich, smooth and moderately complex chardonnay with peach, stone fruit, oyster shell, mineral, lime, hazelnut and spicy oak flavours. Nicely balanced with a lingering finish. Plenty of weight and flavour. Impressive. 28/8/2019." Drink 2019 - 2025
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)
"Complex, engaging and seductive, the bouquet shows golden peach, mango, vanilla custard and roasted hazelnut characters. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent fruit weight and concentration, together with creamy mouthfeel and brilliantly pitched acidity. It is opulent and graceful at the same time with plenty of delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2021. $35.00. www.cooperscreek.co.nz. Jan 2019."
19-/20 Raymond Chan (2016 vintage)
"Full, even, light golden-yellow colour with some depth. The nose is softly full, broad and voluminous with gentle, harmonious layers of ripe yellow stonefruits and tropical fruits along with subtle, savoury reductive elements, mealy complexities and nutty oak. This has detail and finesse. Medium-full bodied, the palate has layered flavours of ripe white and yellow stonefruits, and tropical fruit, harmoniously melded with nutty oak and creamy barrel-ferment elements. The flavours form a rounded but concentrated core that unfolds richness and detail. The mouthfeel possesses a fine acid line that provides freshness and linearity. The wine flows smoothly to a gentle, elegant, refined finish. This is a refined and elegantly concentrated, complex detailed and harmoniously balanced Chardonnay. Match with roasted pork and veal over the next 4-5 years. Fruit from a single site on the Havelock North hills, fully barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months on less in approx. 30% new French oak barrels, undergoing batonnage and full MLF. 19.0-/20 Sep 2018 RRP $38.00."
