2017 Planeta Cerasuolo Dorilli

91 Points Wine Enthusiast
In stock
An elegant premium wine from the southern coast of Sicily, near Vittoria. While the cheaper red-labelled Cerasuolo is the standard regional wine, this Dorilli label is a special Cerasuolo di Vittoia Classico DOCG -- "Classico" meaning the best vineyards from a delimited subzone and also extra aging before release (12 month of which were in classy oak). The style's wonderful brightness and cherry-spice are retained but deepened here by a greater proportion of Nero D'Avola, while the bright acidity is brought to earth by nice ripe, grainy tannins. A top wine in a refined and quite cutting style, this will shine after a good decant before dinner, or a spell in the cellar.
$39.99 in mixed 6+ or $44.99 per bottle

70% Nero D'Avola and 30% Frappato

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

What The Critics Say

91/100 wine Enthusiast

"A blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato, this opens with aromas of black-skinned berry, carob and Mediterranean brush. The savory, balanced palate offers black cherry, orange zest, blackberry jam and white pepper alongside polished tannins."

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2016 vintage)

"Here's a terrific lean to mid-weight red wine from Sicily. The 2016 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli is a vibrant and lively blend of 70% Nero d'Avola and 30% Frappato that burst from the glass with immediate appeal. I love the energy you get from this easy-drinking red." Drink 2018 - 2022

92/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata (2016 vintage)

"Bright red. Flowers, red cherry and licorice on the nose; I especially like the fact that you can actually smell here the contribution of both the Frappato and the Nero d’Avola. Then fresh and very floral, with red cherry fruit strongly marked by notes of lavender and underbrush. Finishes long and spicy, with a pretty undertone of floral nuances that are currently pushed into the background. A little less luscious and forward than some past Dorilli vintages, time will help this lovely wine develop more nuance and grace." Drink 2021 - 2025
