2014 Squawking Magpie Gimblett Gravels The Nest Merlot
Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.
What The Critics Say
Results of previous vintages include Trophy and Gold Champion Hawkes Bay Merlot at the 2014 New Zealand International Wine Show, as well as Trophy Champion Merlot and Blends at the 2016 International Wine Challenge
4.5 Stars Winestate Magazine
This sturdy, surprisingly youthful red is a single-vineyard blend of merlot (86%), malbec (10%) and cabernet franc (4%), matured for 20 months in French oak casks (33% new). It has bold, bright colour and a fragrant, fresh bouquet, with a hint of herbs. Mouthfilling, with vibrant plum and blackcurrant flavours, showing considerable complexity, it’s well worth cellaring to 2022 onwards.
91/100 Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parkers Wine Advocate
"A bit flashier than the 2013, the 2014 The Nest Merlot showcases flamboyant cedar and vanilla notes upfront, but it backs the sexy oak with ample black cherry fruit. This medium to full-bodied wine adds hints of dried herbs and tobacco along the way, framed by slightly astringent, woody tannins, then performs a rich, velvety fade on the finish. Drink 2020-2028"
