Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

"Aromas of blackberry and blue fruits, dark plums and baking spices of clove and dark vanilla pod. Smoky barrel scents and stony earthy qualities add complexity and depth. Fragrant and very enticing. Full-bodied on the palate with flavours of dark berries and plums, spice and toasty barrel all reflect the bouquet. Bold tannins and medium+ acidity drive through foundation and mouthfeel. Violets and a gun-flint layer round out a delicious overall palate. Well made and ready to drinking from late 2022 and through 2030." Drink 2022 - 2030

The wine offers splendid fruit purity and complexity on the nose showing Black Doris plum, blackcurrant, vanilla, cedar and mixed spice notes. It is succulent and wonderfully rounded on the palate, delivering bright fruit intensity and silky mouthfeel, backed by fine grade tannins. Beautifully balanced and soothing, this is elegant yet intense with layers of delectable flavours.
