2019 Squawking Magpie Gimblett Gravels Chatterer Merlot Cabernets
Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.
What The Critics Say
94/100 and rated Excellent by Cameron Douglas MS
"Intense aromas of dark berries, chocolate, barrel spices, dark plum, blackberry, cassis, clove and violets. Youthful, fresh, ripe, spicy and complex. On the palate - youthful, tense and ripe and with intensity - ripe red berry fruits, plum and baked goods, chocolate and sweet tobacco, violets and toasty barrel baking spices. Firm, ripe tannins and plenty of acidity provide a strong foundation for the core of fruit. A lovely example ready to drink if decanted with best drinking from 2023 through 2033+." Drink 2023 - 2033
4.5 Stars Sam Kim (2016 vintage)
The wine offers splendid fruit purity and complexity on the nose showing Black Doris plum, blackcurrant, vanilla, cedar and mixed spice notes. It is succulent and wonderfully rounded on the palate, delivering bright fruit intensity and silky mouthfeel, backed by fine grade tannins. Beautifully balanced and soothing, this is elegant yet intense with layers of delectable flavours.
