2018 Planeta Nocera Rosso

A new label and winery for Planeta -- an aromatic red from the Nocera grape grown on Sicily's north-eastern tip. Here around Messina is one of Sicily's wonderful localised traditions. Nocera here offers a typical aromatic brightness and medium weight, in the general east-Sicilian vein (it is sometimes blended with Nerello varieties of Etna, from due south). Ripe dark cherry with charming spice and dried herb notes offer expressive freshness with an easy Mediterranean warmth. The same yet indescribably different, this is a beautiful red to drink now with richer fish and leghter meat dishes, or age into something yet more silky and complex. A rare delight.

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage

"Deep and intense ruby red reflections. On the nose the wine is original and different from others; white pepper, geranium and summer fruits, plums and ripe Noto figs. On the palate it is soft and persuasive, the typical style of this ancient Sicilian grape variety and definitely to be experienced. The vines are still young and so also the structure of the wine, which however remains utterly original. Perfectly matched with any grilled meat."

17+/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller (2017 vintage)

"Exotic cherry and spice nose. Lots of personality and interest on the nose. Gorgeous raspberry and blood orange on the palate with fantastic, energetic acidity. Great length and has bags of interest. This begs for a grilled, unadorned tuna steak. (WS)."

90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2015 vintage)

"From Planeta's new (and absolutely stunning) vineyard on the Capo Milazzo promontory that overlooks a shimmering blue sea comes the 2015 Sicilia Nocera. Nocera is an indigenous grape found in the northern part of Sicily and there are few few wineries that produce it as a mono-variety wine. These grapes live in terrestrial paradise and that smug but very happy realization has been made abundantly clear in the high quality of this exciting new Sicilian wine. It offers dark cherry and red currant aromas with pretty tones of dried flower and herb at the back. There are no rough edges here. -- If I were to make a top-ten classification of Italy's most beautiful vineyard sites, Planeta's new Capo Milazzo estate would be featured near the top of that list. A steep rocky promontory jets out over an azure sea with gentle waves that crash against its flanks. On a thin strip of highland, Alessio Planeta and his vineyard team have carefully designed vineyard rows. The windy Capo Milazzo is a stunning corner of Sicily, not far from the port town of Milazzo, where colorful hand gliders soar in constant motion overhead. I had the opportunity to taste Planeta's newest creation: A wine made with 100 percent Nocera grapes." Drink 2016 - 2020
