2018 Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino
Il Poggione is one of Montalcino's best and also more historic estates, established at the end of the 19th Century by Lavinio Franceschi and now run by the fifth generation. But the star quality may be the current winemakers, father-son team Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci. With consummate skill they have introduced modern technology while maintaining traditional style and techniques, similarly balancing a natural and non-interventionist ethic while remaining unusually involved in every aspect of vineyard and production. As superlatives are lavished on their wines from the highest quarters, Il Poggione is coming to embody the supreme quality on offer from this famous yet still undervalued Tuscan appellation.
What The Critics Say
91/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
"Bright red. Flint, ripe red cherry and sweet spices on the very ripe and forward but ultimately fresh nose. The sweet spice notes and a refined, austere mouthfeel are typical of the S.Angelo in Colle terroir. Closes juicy and fresh, with lively flavors of red cherry and more sweet spices, plus hints of underbrush. Ages one year in both used 30-50hL oak barrels and used barriques, then spends six months in bottle before being released for sale. Made from 15-year old vineyards." Drink 2020 - 2023
90/100 Vinous, Eric Guido
"The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is gorgeous, mixing both primary fruit and earth tones to create a wonderfully balanced expression, showing crushed cherries in an array of smoky minerals, dusty soil and sweet herbs. On the palate, I'm finding soft textures, given life by zesty acids and backed by a core of tart blackberry, spiced-orange, and saline-minerality, as a hint of youthful tannin collects on the senses. The finish is medium in length, wonderfully fresh yet focused, as its vibrant fruits give way to lingering florals. The 2018 Rosso is yet another overperformer from Il Poggione." Drink 2020 - 2028
Wine Enthusiast, Kerin O'Keefe
"Blue-flower, wild berry and pine-resin aromas come together in the glass. On the tense, racy palate, nervous acidity accompanies sour cherry and white pepper alongside dusty, drying tannins. Drink through 2022."
