A wonderful Grand Cru Riseling from the Moselle Valley. Alte Reben means 'old vines' and in this case they are exceptionally old, as the wine is sourced in 120+ year old vines in the original portion of the Wurzgarten vineyard. The red volcanic soil here is renowned for producing spicy, exotic Rieslings and this old vine cuvee delivers intensec concentration and an incredibly long, mouthwatering finish. Outstanding value and potential at this price!
$63.99 in mixed 6+ or $70.99 per bottle

Its Origins

Situated on Germany’s Mosel River among some of the world’s most treasured vineyards, the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced LOH-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s top-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class Rieslings. To achieve this, Ernst immediately changed the estate’s vineyard practices to dramatically reduce crop size. He stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments. He extended his commitment to sustainable practices beyond the vineyards and into the winery, implementing improvements in materials recycling, energy efficiency and water conservation. At harvest, he insisted on fully mature fruit that had been very strictly selected. And he turned to gentler cellar practices that would allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of technological meddling.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Parkers Wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2017 vintage)

"The 2017 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben shows very delicate, elegant, mineral and slatey aromas of white peaches on the stylish, coolish nose. It is lush, fresh and piquant on the palate, with a crystalline structure. This is a very clear, elegant Riesling with tropical fruits flavors on the long, silky, well-structured finish."

95/100 Wine Enthusiast (2017 vintage)

"Hints of smoke, struck flint and spice accent this gorgeously honeyed, intensely concentrated dry Riesling. Tangerine, quince and lemon flavors are rich and reverberating, edged by thrilling lime acidity and long, earthen finish. Fantastic already but it should gain complexity through 2030 and likely longer."
