95 Points Bob Campbell MW
In stock
An intense and "dramatic" Bordeaux blend from Waiheke legends, Man O' War. With Merlot and Cabernet Franc leading the blend, the palate is plush as well as complex and spicy. Depth and class make this a satisfying and charismatic red from Man O' War. Drink now or cellar.
$53.99 in mixed 6+ or $59.99 per bottle

Grape

Usually a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot along with some Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

Its Origins

First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.
Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A blend of merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and cabernet sauvignon that combines density with complexity. Alcohol sweetness balances ripe tannins to give a pleasantly dry finish. Accessible now but should develop well with bottle age. 20 APR 2023." Drink 2023 - 2033

16+/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"Bordeaux blend. 53% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, 16% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. A little deeper crimson than the 2019. Ripe, lifted nose. Lots of vibrancy and the ingredients are already well integrated. Sweet start, just the right side of too sweet. Then the acidity creeps in. Still pretty youthful. Tannins definitely there but quite well covered by all that ripe fruit. The merest hint of cocoa, plus dried undergrowth." Drink 2024 - 2029

96/100 James Suckling (2019 vintage)

"Very high-toned dark-fruit aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries, flowers and stone. It’s full-bodied with a compact palate and fantastic finish. Cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon, and malbec. Drinkable now, but better in three to five years."
