A Syrah of massive depth and presence, this top cuvee is made only in the best years. Only the best, perfectly ripe fruit from the Gimblett and Te Awanga vineyards was hand harvested in five passes, then fermented in small open-top barrels and aged in French oak, with some older vessels keeping that pure dark berry intensity. Another coup, this is lush now but a real keeper as well.

Syrah with 2% Viognier

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

98/100 Sam Kim

"This profound syrah exhibits black/blue berry, cocoa, smoked game, warm spice and cedar characters on the nose, leading to a concentrated and sumptuous palate that is dense and richly textured. The wine explodes in the mouth with delicious flavours and mouth-coating textures, wonderfully complemented by seductive savoury nuances, finishing extremely long and velvety. At its best: 2020 to 2030. $120.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. April 2018." Drink 2020 - 2030

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Flagship syrah made from grapes grown in Gimblett Gravels (67%) and Te Awanga. It's a dense, yet supple and quite accessible red with plum, dark berry, cassis, black pepper, liquorice, anise and a suggestion of violet flavours. An attractive wine with obvious potential." Drink 2016 - 2026

19.50/20 Raymond Chan

"Very dark, deep, impenetrable black-red with purple hues, youthful in appearance. This has a huge, massively concentrated, and powerfully intense nose, packed with ripe black berried and plum fruits with liquorice and Asian spices, a fine iron-earth mineral layer and reductive complexities and detail. Layers of fruits, spices and minerals unfold, the interest overflowing. This has immense density and depth, and makes a bold and powerful statement. Full-bodied, the fruit is extremely rich, sweet and succulent, quite lush with ripe black berried fruits, now revealing a little savoury complexity of dried herb and earth to the layers of spice and minerals. The extraction is enormous, but balanced by the fruit richness, and refined by the powdery tannin textures. with integrated, seamless acidity lending a degree of finesse. There is no doubt this is stupendous wine, just developing some edgy savoury complexities. This will develop over the next 15-20 years. Syrah fruit with 2% Viognier, two-thirds from the Gimblett and one-third from the Te Awanga vineyards, fermented with approx. 15% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 26 months in 71% new French oak. 149 dozen made. 19.5+/20 Apr 2018 RRP $120.00."
